Disability Sport

One of WASP’s key Values within our Strategy is: ‘Demonstrating and promoting Respect for the diversity in our sports community’ and one of our Strategic Objectives is to ‘Enable greater participation for all’.

WASP works with Local Authorities, School Sports Networks, Special Schools, National Governing Bodies, EFDS, National Disability Sports Organizations, Youth Sport Trust, local disability groups, local clubs and charities to ensure that sport and physical activity is available to people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities living in the county.

We provide a range of funded programme support and events to develop and promote opportunities for people with disabilities.  For example, as part of the School Games programme we hold an annual Panathlon Event featuring Boccia, Polybat, New Age Kurling, Table Cricket and field Athletics. We have supported numerous clubs with Sportivate and Satellite Club funding to promote specialist clubs and inclusivity. Workforce support is provided in many ways including inclusive based courses and a coach bursary scheme. We also work with a range of partner organisations to promote opportunities and support both in sport and active recreation for disabled people.

We are always keen to develop further links with local clubs, groups and organizations who work directly with disabled people or who are keen to develop their offer for people with disabilities.

The Disabled Golf Association aims to facilitate access to golf for disabled and impaired people in England. DGA have achieved status as a charitable Community Interest Company (CIC) with the sole purpose of getting more people onto a golf course for therapy and general well-being. Disability Golf Association

You may be wondering WHY should you encourage your club to support the work we do?

It truly is amazing the power of the human mind to overcome adversity. Sport can be vital in therapy and rehabilitation of disabled people, as well of course as those with impairments/hidden disabilities. Golf of course compared to other sports, played with a stationary ball, can stimulate neural pathways and I know from personal experience the difference my participation has made on my health having primary progressive MS.

We are formally recognised as a charitable CIC (community interest company) by the Charities Aid Foundation i.e. a not-for-profit limited company.

The DGA has received no funding for two years now from either the R&A or Sport England (who are responsible for Big Lottery funding in sport), though we are at the core of England Golf's Disability Forum; so we are working hard to become financially independent largely based on the goodwill of golf clubs and sponsors in industry. There's a lot of funding available to local organisations so as a national body we struggle to find funding.

We are an INCLUSIVE pan-disabled organisation with over 850 members across the UK including civilian, those in service and most important those who have left the services. You can see how we bring smiles to people's faces on our Flickr website at https://www.flickr.com/photos/disabledgolf/sets

Who are our members?

People just like you, unfortunately disability or impairment can hit at any stage of life. We have over 800 members who include ex service, currently serving and civilians who either have a congenital condition such as Cerebral Palsy/Downs syndrome/learning difficulties/deaf or blind, have had an accident or had to deal with losing limbs or diagnosis of a condition like can MS, Cancer or Parkinson's or had a Stroke.
