Tips to Get Moving when it's Cold and Dark

We know that can be difficult to get active during the Autumn and Winter months. The clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in earlier, and the weather is getting colder and wetter. However, physical activity is vital for our physical and mental health. That's why we've put together some of our top tips to help you to be active everyday.

1. Do What you Enjoy

Try to find activities that you'll want to take part in even when the weather is not great. Having fun and enjoying yourself when you're active is a great source of motivation to take part. If you're looking outside and don't feel like going for that walk or run, think of how much you'll enjoy it when you're out there, and how you'll feel when you get back.

2. Make it Social

Combining physical activity with socialising is a great way to get motivated, and really important for our mental health to ensure we aren't feeling isolated. Why not arrange a weekly catch up with a friend over a lunchtime walk and festive hot drink? You could also join a local physical activity group or club where you can meet new people. Find information on local clubs in Wiltshire and Swindon through our Activity Finder.

3. Think of the Benefits

Participating in regular physical activity is associated with many benefits, including:

  • Reduced risk of depression and anxiety
  • Increased bone strength
  • Reduced risk of diseases including cancer and osteoarthritis
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Improved flexibility, balance and co-ordination
  • Improved quality of sleep

When you're struggling to find the motivation to get active, remember all the benefits that physical activity can bring.

4. Be Prepared

If you're venturing outside to get active, make sure you check the weather forecast in advance and wear appropriate clothing. Layers are great as you can take them off if you get too hot. If you're going out in the evenings choose well lit areas and plan your route in advance.

5. Get Active Indoors

If you really don't fancy getting active outside, why not get moving from the comfort of your home? Through previous Covid-19 lockdowns many people discovered the benefits of being active in their own living rooms. There are plenty of FREE videos to choose from online. We've collated some of our favourites, including some from local physical activity instructors on this page.

If you don't fancy getting active at home you could always join your local gym, or find a club or activity near you that takes place indoors.
