Aims, Objectives and Content

  • To understand the evidence for exercise in the prevention of falls and where the Otago programme 'fits' within local exercise continuums.

  • Application of the principles of exercise training in relation to older people
  • To recognise the opportunities of the OEP Leader in supporting behaviour change over-time (and achieve the required exercise dose to reduce falls)
  • To develop the skills necessary to lead the OEP effectively to frailer older people with a high risk, or history of falls

Senior Games Festival 2024

On Wednesday 17th January we held our first face to face Swindon Senior Games Festival at Lydiard Park Hotel and Conference Centre. Over 40 residents took part in competitive activities including target mat throw, foam javelin, tin-can alley and golf putting. We were joined by residents from:- Orchid Care Home- Edgehill Care Home- Fessey House Residential Care- Lansdowne Hill Care Home- Ridgeway Rise Care Home

The Festival was a celebration of a 12 week programme which supported 9 care homes across Swindon working with older adults to increase their physical activity, with an aim to improve physical function and quality of life in those participating. The festival provided an all-inclusive, fun physical activity competition, which brought all participants and staff together. Well done to everyone who took part, it really was a joyful afternoon, and congratulations to Lansdowne Hill Care Home who achieved the highest scores and won the trophy!

Huge thanks goes out to Lawn Manor Academy students for their invaluable support in delivering the event, Lydiard Park Hotel and Conference Centre for hosting and looking after us, Swindon Borough Council Public Health Team, and Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust team for your support over the 12 week programme and ensuring the day ran smoothly, and to Katie & Annamaria for delivering the 12 week programme within the care homes!

Park Yoga provides free yoga outdoors in public parks in the UK. The sessions are open to all to attend, regardless of experience, age or gender. Park Yoga runs for one hour on Sunday mornings, between May and September. Since starting in 2017 with just two parks in Dorset, Park Yoga has expanded to deliver at 32 parks in 2023 with 6 locations being held in Wiltshire & Swindon (Salisbury, Devizes, Swindon, Trowbridge, Chippenham and Wanborough.

9253 participants joined Park Yoga across Wiltshire last year (an average of 77 per site, per week). The feedback from participants can be seen below;

'Park Yoga has encouraged me to be more active. To move out of my comfort zone and try new things. I have enjoyed giving myself time for me and to relax and enjoy the outdoor space.'

'It has connected me with the community of Salisbury, which I was not part of even after moving to Wiltshire 2 years ago. It has provided a weekly social activity which also benefited my mental health.'

'Being able to just 'pitch-up' on a Sunday morning without having to make an earlier commitment adds to the general positivity Park Yoga gives me. I get so much enjoyment from joining in with this activity and leave the park with joy (even when it rained).'

Watch this space for Park Yoga 2024!
