MILFORD HOUSE CARE HOME RESIDENTS COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL ORGANISATIONS TO TAKE ON THE LONDON MARATHON

marathon group opening 1 SmallResidents and staff at Milford House care home in Salisbury have put on their walking shoes to undertake their version of the London Marathon. Following an official opening ceremony on the 6th August they broke through the opening tape to start their journey of 61,565 steps or 26.23 miles!

Staff and residents are completing their London Marathon as part of an initiative rolled out and jointly funded by Wiltshire & Swindon Sport (WASP) and Salisbury City Council’s Community Activity Leaders aimed at helping to keep up levels of individual activity during lockdown. Packs containing a range of physical activities and support materials were delivered to the home as part of this initiative and this is one of several activities that residents at Milford House are trying. Starting in East London the course passes the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Tower Bridge, The British Museum, Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Kew Gardens and Richmond Park before finishing at Hampton Court Palace where medals will be handed out. To make this involving for all home residents there are also virtual tours being shown of all the landmarks passed along the route. Residents use a pedometer to count their steps which are then subtracted from the total needed to complete the route – so every step counts!

General Manager Marie-Therese Tiernan said:

“We always encourage our residents to keep active and walking the London Marathon is a great way to get residents involved in outdoor activities whilst making the most of the weather and our stunning gardens. Our residents are really enjoying the challenge of the walk, whether on foot or in wheelchairs and it is lovely to see so many of them getting involved. I am so impressed that they have already completed a quarter of the course! Everyone can follow our progress along the course and enjoy the virtual tours of the key landmarks passed.   This has created a real buzz in the home and who knows we may go on to further challenges such as the Avon Valley Path or walking from Lands’ End to John O’Groats!”

Residents at Milford House Care Home commented:

“This has got us all out and about and working towards a joint target like this is fun.”
“We also get the added bonus of finding out more about the landmarks we pass on the way and some of the virtual tours are amazing.”
“I can’t wait to see what we will do next!”

Calendar of Events

Calendar of EventsWiltshire and Swindon Active Sports Partnership (WASP) and School Games Organisers are continuing to work together in response to Government guidelines around COVID-19.  It has been decided that all School Games events will remain virtual until at least September 2021.

After the success of the VSG last summer, we have decided to repeat it and the calendar of events will go live on Monday 7th June.  The emphasis is on recovery and regaining fitness, rather than competition.  The activities can be carried out at school or with family at home.  All entries will count towards the school participation league table.

Over the years, we have noticed that some of the young people in our county go the extra mile in promoting these values, whether as competitors, team mates or young leaders.  To recognise this, we have introduced the Spirit of the Games Award.

If you have a pupil who you feel has been an excellent role model in promoting these values, we would love to hear about it.  Please use the form below to tell us their story so that we can say thank you to them for their contribution to our sporting community.

Free Yoga Sessions for Schools

yoga 2We know that there is a lot of confusion and uncertainty about the current situation which is likely to lead to increased levels of stress among both young people and their teachers over the coming weeks and months.  Schools have told us they would like relaxation resources to help with this, as well as for those with exam stress.

In response to this, we have produced a series of Relaxation & Meditation through Yoga videos produced locally by Sarah Naylor, Salisbury’s Park Yoga Instructor!  The sessions are:

  • Pre-recorded online sessions
  • Suitable for both students and staff
  • Minimal/no equipment needed
  • Last approximately 15 minutes

Sarah has also produced an accompanying video guide on how to sit comfortably when taking part in the sessions, as many people of all ages find it hard to remain comfortable for more than a few minutes.

For more information on how meditation can help reduce stress, please take a look at this NHS article.

The video sessions will all be led by Salisbury's Park Yoga instructor Sarah Naylor. If you are interested in bespoke sessions for your school, please feel free to contact Sarah directly.

The first 2 videos below (Introduction to Seated Yoga 1 & 2) offer guides on how to sit comfortably when taking part in the sessions, as many people of all ages find it hard to remain comfortable for more than a few minutes.
