Jan Wright's Story
Jan Wright is a 65 year old who has become a Wiltshire Walking Netball Host. She had recently retired so it was an opportunity to take on a new role and develop new skills. She finds walking netball is a great way of meeting new people within Wiltshire and enjoy encouraging and being part of the social aspects of the sessions.
Jan has always been interested in sport so when Walking Netball launched in Wiltshire in 2017 she was very keen to give it a go. She attended the very first session and has been going ever since! Wiltshire Council encouraged her to progress from participant to deliverer as she saw the positive impact the sessions had on players. She attended the official England Netball Walking Netball host training course and since then has been the host for Melksham and Corsham Wiltshire Walking Netball sessions. She is also a key organiser in additional activities, merged sessions and festivals for the Walking Netball community in Wiltshire.
One of her favourite things is seeing people smiling and having fun again. The groups get a wide variety of people to the sessions and seeing people’s confidence and enjoyment grow is something she is proud of. There have been stand out moments with participants who have disabilities, anxiety or dementia when they are achieving skills they didn’t think were possible, as a host this this is a feeling that can’t be beat. She says "Its great that Wiltshire Council’s hosts and sessions have been recoginised for being inclusive as its something we pride ourselves on".
Amongst the skills Jan has developed through her coaching are patience and to try to make things humorous to make sure everyone is having fun. she's also learnt to be more inclusive when planning and delivering sessions.
