Case Study: Scrappers Gym

scrappers editedWe caught up with Paul Rogers at Scrappers Community Gym to find out how the club was adapting to the current situation. As well as keeping their community moving through live workouts, the Club has brought together its members to support the most vulnerable.

Keeping the community moving

Scrappers Community Gym has a facebook page (@scrappergym), where they post online workouts with one of their coaches, Darren Sherwood. At 7pm, Daz, as he is known on Facebook, talks people through a workout, live from Scrappers Gym.

On their facebook page you can also find ideas for children and adults for training and equipment to use during lockdown.

Supporting their community

Scrappers are also keeping in regular contact with certain members, showing the gym genuinely care about how their members are doing.  Head coach Paul Rogers says;

"A quick text or phone call, can mean a lot to someone who is feeling lonely"

Scrappers gym is a project set up by Swindon Children’s Scrapstore, so the gym have been able to use their page to let people know how they can get involved in helping the community through the Scrapstore. The Scrapstore have adapted and are now delivering food and supplies to vulnerable people in the local area. Many gym members have got involved, both in helping to deliver or putting people’s names forward to receive supplies.

Additionally, through the Scrapstore, gym members have got involved by raising money through donations for a 24hour Fitathon. Funds raised will provide FREE food parcels for elderly and vulnerable people across Swindon, FREE Creative Play Art and Craft Boxes and Educational and Fun Activity Packs for children who don’t have access to a computer so they can continue education at home during lockdown.

As well as this, the Scrapstore has set up a befriending service, encouraging people to contact others who are isolated or having little communication with others.

Biggest Challenges

Despite being able to move some workouts online and maintain contact with their members, Paul Rogers highlighted there are many challenges for sports clubs operating during lockdown:

"One of the most difficult issues has been being physically unable to provide a session & a space which has been so helpful to so many people in so many different ways.

The frustration that peoples habits are sometimes difficult & very challenging to change. We all now,  have to adapt, this is a challenge for everyone, even for people who have had to carry on working, whilst everyone else seems to be relaxing or doing things that seem like fun whilst they still have to do the same job they have always done, often under more difficult situations.

Being Kind cost nothing, little kind gestures in this difficult time can make a huge difference to the mood of your community."

Scrappers Gym quote postTop 3 ways of staying engaged with your club members

  1. Have someone from the gym contact members, even if it is just to say hello, how are you doing.
  2. If possible offer a workout sheet or even better a video or live stream.
  3. Try & find out how many people have engaged in the the posts or videos etc. and work as a team to promote conversation amongst yourselves and contact people who have had no contact with anyone.

"I could speak to someone, encouraging them to give somebody else a call, if we can't see each other socially, it is worth letting people know their club is more than just a space. Teamwork makes the dreamwork."
