About Football

FootballFootball is the world's most popular sport, being played by over 250 million players across 200 countries, and the history of Football in England dates back to at least the 8th century.

The game is played by two teams of 11 players on a rectangular field of grass or artificial turf, with a goal for each team.

The aim of the game is to drive the ball into the opposing team's goal. The goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands, while field players typically use their feet to kick the ball, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept the ball in mid air.

The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins, and if the score is tied either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time or a penalty shootout.

The first recorded women's football match was played in North London in 1895, and in the 1920's was extremely popular, with some women's matches watched by crowds of over 50,000 people.  Since then, women's football has become more and more popular, with teams across the UK and national and international level competitions being held regularly.

Disability football is also increasing popular with over 215 disability football teams across England, Scotland and Wales for those with physical disabilities, hearing and visual impairments, and learning difficulties.

The Football Association is the National Governing Body for Association Football in England.
