Active Lives Children and Young People

What is the Active Lives Survey?

The Active Lives Survey gathers information on how children across England engage with sport and physical activity. The survey is school-based and covers measures of children's activity levels, physical literacy, swimming proficiency, well-being, self-efficacy, and levels of social trust.

Sport England aims to survey 100,000 children and young people in Years 1 to 11 each academic year, of which 1800 are from Wiltshire and Swindon.

Benefits of Completing the Survey

One survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, but the results can influence local decision-making and government policy.

Schools who are randomly selected to participate will receive:

a bespoke school report from Sport England about their pupils
credits to exchange for sports equipment
A healthy schools rating from the department for education

Opting in to Complete the Survey

If your school is not randomly selected to participate, you can opt-in to complete the survey voluntarily. Schools who choose to opt-in are not eligible to receive credits for sports equipment, but they will receive a report summarising survey responses (if enough responses are received) and a Healthy Schools Rating (if the teacher survey is completed). Click here to complete our short and simple opt-in form to find out more information.

Completing the Survey

WASP are responsible for providing ongoing support to each school in Wiltshire and Swindon who have been randomly selected by Sport England to participate in the Survey. You can view the list of schools who have been selected for the current term (term 5) below.

Typically, a school will be invited to survey 2/3 individual classes in the school, and one teacher. The responses from the teacher survey will be used to calculate the Healthy Schools Rating. For younger pupils in years 1/2, parents may also be asked to complete a questionnaire. For each complete parent questionnaire you have the chance to gain 1 extra credit (worth £10) towards sports equipment.

Sport England have created the following two guides to support schools who have been selected to participate. They provide an overview of the steps involved to complete your survey, give more detail about incentives available, and provide key documents including example school reports and questionnaires to give you an idea of what to expect.
