Ben Coombes' Story
Ben Coombes is a 29 year old multi-sports coach who specializes in cricket. He is self-employed and works on Wiltshire Council's Helathy Me project. For Ben, physical activity had always been a passion and he wnated to give something back to the sports he loves. He says; "Although I’m not good enough to become an elite athlete I’ve always wanted a career in sport. My father has also been a big inspiration for me to play and coach in a sporting environment."
Ben works in several primary schools coaching sport as well as being a regular sports coach for Wiltshire Council. As part of his Wiltshire Council delivery he works on the Doorstep Sports Club’s which delivers activities to disadvantaged young people at the heart of their communities and the Healthy Me programme which is a weight management programme for children and their families. He also plays and coaches for Dinton rugby and cricket clubs.
One of his greatest moments in coaching was being awarded Young Cricket Coach of the Year for Wiltshire 2013. He has also supported a number of school teams to county and regional finals. "I am proud to be able to engage children into sport and physical activity that were not interested before".
Ben says that he is constantly learning from others and developing the various skills involved in being a successful coach. He also hopes to progress more into Sports Development in the future. During his experience as a coach he has learnt how to manage a groups behavior as well as a wide range of other useful transferable skills such as self-assessment, learning from others and team work.
