Dame Kelly Holmes Trust: Get on Track Wiltshire 2019
WASP are pleased to be able to partner with The Blagrave Trust, Youth Action Wiltshire and the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to deliver a second Get on Track programme to young people in Wiltshire this year. The Get on Track programme is a community-based personal, social and emotional development programme for young people and is led by world class athletes over a 14-month period and is aimed at young people aged 16-25 who are facing disadvantage.
After the initial introductions and some inspirational words of encouragement from the athletes Rich Parker (Inline Skating) and Liz Johnson (Swimming) it was straight into some team work and confidence building sessions for the group. Over the course of the 3 On Your Marks sessions, there were some noticeable changes in confidence from the group. This began to develop after a number of sessions that included public speaking, problem-solving and sharing sessions.
Cleo Evans, Youth Action Wiltshire Programmes Coordinator says:
“The athletes Rich and Liz did an amazing job in ensuring all the on your marks activities appealed to all abilities and made them inclusive to all. This was evident in the way the young people responded positively to the activities and to Rich and Liz, whose professional and dynamic qualities made them so much more personal and engaging to each young person. We were so impressed with how the young people responded to the athletes and at how much effort they gave to the three days and the support they gave to each other individually and collectively”
We are thoroughly looking forward to the next phase of the programme “Get Set” which will be starting in March.
